American Culture and Social Norms

Language and culture are two inseparable entities and an integral aspect of learning and teaching a foreign language. Furthermore, EFL learners and teachers’ mastery of the linguistic elements alone cannot guarantee their success in communicating through English language. Therefore, acquirement of the cultural element is a must; language is closely related to culture, and culture needs to be learnt and taught. However, many EFL teachers underestimate this key component in language teaching. To this end, this book has been designed to teach Iranian EFL teachers and learners to be familiar with American culture and social norms, and to raise their awareness about the importance of teaching and learning American culture and social norms. Therefore, in order to achieve this goal, this book includes 18 chapters, and each chapter contains several sections which will help you get better adjusted to American English norms, and foster your cultural awareness. On the other hand, it is worth noting that all languages and cultures have their own consistencies and inconsistencies, so we cannot say a language or culture is superior to the other one.
